Writing and Editing

Visual writing should bridge the gap between those who are fluent in picas, pigments, or pediments and everyone else. To that end, I take the time to learn about the organization or person I’m writing for, their audience, and the subject matter I’m writing about. Whether you’re an artist who needs someone to breathe life into your website or a design firm in need of exhibition text that both informs and delights, I’ll work with you to understand your needs and budget and then propose bespoke solutions. Some of the topics I’ve covered include:

The wide variety of media I’ve worked in has allowed me to become a versatile writer of everything from academic to irreverent prose. Examples include book writing and editing, website text, digital media, augmented reality, audio tour and podcast scripts, video scripts, gallery text, walking tours, exhibition catalogs, artists’ statements, and grant writing. When a project calls for it, I’ve consulted on image research and layout. I’ve even been known to write a personal ad or two.

Rates are competitive and based on the scope and timetable of the project.

Yes, I believe in the Oxford comma.

But the interrobang‽ still undecided.

Research

The art of research involves understanding where to look, having an open mind, and knowing when to stop. Whether you are a dealer with an object of mysterious provenance or a designer with a project that needs more historical context—or anyone in between—I’ll bring my attention to detail and enthusiasm to helping you find answers. There’s not an art library in New York that’s unfamiliar to me. I also travel as necessary for research projects. All work is fully documented and summarized on a mutually agreeable timetable. Here are some of repositories I’ve worked in:

Rates are hourly or daily and based on the scope and timetable of the project.

My work is engaging, meticulous, and always delivered on time.

Grant Writing

I bring a practical, detail-oriented approach to grant-writing projects. I have worked with a variety of nonprofit organizations and individuals writing successful grant proposals to private foundations and state and federal agencies, including the New York State Council on the Arts, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Rates are fixed and based on the scope of the grant application.
